Fundamentals of Boxing

Course Description: Welcome to our first Boxing MiniCourse!! This class will continue the tradition started by Underdog Boxing Gym of welcoming all participants to learn the art of boxing in a safe and fun environment. The course will cover fundamentals of boxing, proper techniques, cardio training, bag work, shadow boxing as well as light sparring (if interested). The course is suitable for all levels and focuses on building skill, fitness, and confidence in a positive and supportive environment. Topics will include the following:

  • Introduction to boxing fundamentals, gym etiquette, and safety
  • Basic stance, footwork, balance, and movement
  • Punching mechanics (jab, cross, hook, uppercut)
  • Defensive techniques (guard, slipping, blocking, rolling)
  • Shadowboxing fundamentals and drills
  • Heavy bag and pad work to reinforce technique
  • Boxing-specific cardio and conditioning
  • Basic combinations, timing, and distance control
  • Introduction to light, controlled sparring (optional and based on participant comfort and readiness)
  • Ongoing emphasis on injury prevention, respect, and proper training habits

About the Instructor: Ben Casuga-Magajes (he/him) started his athletic training in Taekwondo and achieved 2 Dan black belt. He competed at the regional, provincial and national levels and was also a coach for the junior levels. He shortly after pivoted to boxing a few years ago and took all the discipline, focus and abilities he learned in Taekwondo into his new passion for boxing. He continues his competitive journey with almost a dozen amateur fights under his belt in just 18 months. Ben currently coaches boxing at CEGEP Andre Laurendeau and will bring the same energy and passion to every session with the McGill community while focusing on safety and consistency in a fun and inclusive environment. 

Required Materials:

  • Athletic clothing and indoor athletic shoes 
  • Hand wraps 

Suggested Materials (NOT mandatory):

  • Boxing gloves (12–16 oz) 
  • Mouthguard 
  • Headgear for sparring (optional)

***Most equipment may be available to borrow through the gym, depending on availability.

Required Knowledge: None!

  • No prior boxing experience or athletic background is required
  • This course is suitable for beginners and those with limited boxing experience
  • Participants should be in generally good health and able to participate in moderate physical activity
