Course Description: Become the master of your own practice through Yoga Fundamentals!
Yoga is a comprehensive system that promotes flexibility, focus, clarity and deep relaxation. More than simply a fitness regimen, yoga encompasses ethical, physical and mental exercises which aim to relieve stress, calm the mind and bring the self into the present moment. Within yoga, students are considered their own best teachers and the masters of their own practice. This series aims to start from the ground up and develop a deep understanding of core yoga fundamentals for students to embody and use in their day-to-day lives.
Starting from the physical, we will use the postural practice of asana to create more fluidity and space, ease and endurance. To stretch and strengthen not only our ligaments and muscles, but also our minds and capacities. Using the physical form as a narrative thread to weave metaphoric wisdom into our one true home, our embodied selves.
Spaciousness creates a sense of ease, which we then fill with inspiration. We will use the stimulating breath practices of pranayama for total alchemical transformation in an energetic dance between our bodies and the force of life itself. In working at the intersection between conscious and unconscious states, breathing exercises are an important component of a healthy life. Expanding our ability to breathe, we deepen the ability to nourish the body with the oxygen our tissues crave.
Settling into ourselves, we will then take time to connect to silence through meditation. In allowing the more active work to support our stillness, we will return to the depths of our internal world to clear away debris from the thinking mind. This allows the body to rest in quiet repose and calmly engage with the stress of everyday life from a more clarified perspective.
From this, participants will develop more fluency in taking care of their physical, mental and emotional needs in a positive and life-affirming way. By the end of the series, students will be equipped with a set of tools to encourage self-directed routines ranging anywhere from 5 minutes to 1 hour.
About the Instructor: Kelly Davis, RYT-500, is an artist and yogi based in Montreal. Her life-long fascination with the power of the human body has allowed for exploration in multiple disciplines of yoga and meditation, professional-level experience in acting and contemporary dance, as well as the study of somatic movement practices for both creative and spiritual pursuits. Kelly’s current yoga practice revolves around the site of the breath as a means to connect the exterior to the interior, the unconscious to the conscious, and to play with rhythm and time to create whole body awareness. Borrowing from isometric bodywork, Zen philosophy, and deeply influenced by the syncretic Katonah Yoga approach developed by Nevine Michaan, Kelly brings her unique perspective to a practice that can evolve with students as they grow and change. Most importantly, she strives to make her classes light-hearted and fun in tandem to develop a deeply grounded, intimate feeling of embodiment. Students leave her class feeling bright and energized with lots of laughs to flow the joy of yoga back into the rest of their lives. Kelly is inspired by the power of yoga to transform and heal through consistent practice. A belief in the power of physical expression drives her passion to teach and guide students to step into their power with plenty of self-care and compassion. Kelly encourages students to settle into themselves to hear and experience the primordial wisdom of their human bodies. Through her classes, she strives to develop an atmosphere that will stimulate and challenge students of all levels to work from a deeper place of healthy, integrated self-knowing. Ultimately she invites students to be their own authority to ever expand into a fuller expression of their true nature.
