Course Description: This course is designed to introduce students to the Intermediate level of American Sign Language (ASL), as well as further expand on their knowledge of the culture and community of Deaf people. As a result of this course, students will be able to carry on conversations on everyday topics (expressive and receptive skills) with fluency and accuracy at the intermediate level. The students will demonstrate a more advanced knowledge of Deaf culture and the Deaf community, and show awareness of and respect for the Deaf community as well.
About the Instructor: Susanna Oppedisano (she/her) is a cultural mediator who combines two linguistic and cultural spheres to integrate students, staff, parents, children, and community, with the goal of balancing the power of the experiences from both sides. Classically trained, she has been teaching ASL for more than 15 years. She brings an attitude of openness and caring towards others, and enjoys helping people in both the Deaf and Hearing communities.
